RETIREMENT HOUSE SHARES A LIFETIME OF WISDOM | RETIREMENT HOUSE CAST

Worry is a thief. It robs you of today, yesterday, and everything. Just dance with the universe.
— Mabel (Gaylynn Baker)

Back in November, Dana and I had the opportunity to fly out to West Hollywood and go on set with the cast and crew of Retirement House, a popular show on Instagram and TikTok showcasing the day to day lives of 6 friends in their later years. To say that we had a blast would be a gross understatement.

If you haven’t watched their short, entertaining videos yet, Mabel, Eugene, Rose, Larry, Jerry, and Bubbe of Retirement House are six actors aged 70-85. While the show is semi-scripted, the crew is obviously having a blast, and we knew that this vibrant, hilarious group was going to have some wisdom to drop on the subject of aging.

And they delivered!

This episode is full of both comical and profound stories, amazing chemistry between the cast and us (if I do say so myself), and background on how the Retirement House show came to be and how it’s evolving.

Candidly sharing experiences that challenge every stereotype about aging, each story is a testament to the wisdom that comes from experience and the joy that can flourish in our later years.

This episode is a lovely reminder that life doesn't wind down after a certain age - it evolves, offering new opportunities for growth, relationships and self-discovery. It's a must-listen for anyone looking to view aging through a more optimistic, vital, and empowering lens.

Gaylynn Baker (stage name Mabel): fondly known as "the table-dancing octogenarian," is an inspiring figure of the Retirement House. At 86, she embodies the spirit of living life to the fullest. Mabel's energy and adventurous spirit are contagious, and she exemplifies the idea that age is no barrier to enjoying every moment. She is also the director of several award winning documentaries, including We Know Not What We Do, a film about climate change.

Chuck Lacy (stage name Eugene): self-described as the "lean, mean sex machine," Eugene is 72 years old and brings a unique blend of humor and wisdom to the group. His playful moniker reflects his approach to life – one that defies age-related stereotypes and embraces joy and self-expression. Eugene's perspective is a refreshing reminder that growing older doesn't mean losing one's sense of fun or adventure.

Reatha Grey (stage name Rose): at 73, Rose brings a sassy, vibrant personality that shines through in her interactions and stories (she also taught us how to twerk!). Rose's attitude towards life and aging is a blend of realism and optimism, and she’s not afraid to take it or dish it.

Monterey Morrissey (stage name Larry): Larry, 72, is another vital member of the Retirement House. He is witty, honest, and has thoughtful reflections about his diverse life experiences.. Larry's warm and engaging personality make him a valuable role model for both young and old.

Jerry Boyd (stage name Curtis): at 77, Curtis has a profound understanding of life's transitions. His experiences and reflections added a needed depth and wisdom to the conversation. Curtis's perspective is particularly valuable in understanding how to approach life's challenges with resilience and a positive mindset.

Patti Yulish (stage name Bubbe): Bubbe, aged 83, stands out as a beacon of wisdom in the Retirement House. Her life experiences and the lessons she's learned along the way are invaluable to both her peers and younger generations. Bubbe's perspective is a testament to the richness that comes with age and the importance of embracing every stage of life with an open heart.
